You’re best off to do a little research on the camera you really want and then see if there’s a decent underwater housing for it. Personally, I’d steer clear of the actual camera manufacturer’s housings. They tend not to allow use of all the camera functions and they are usually only just good enough that they can claim a depth rating of 130ft max. You’re better off protecting that camera investment by purchasing a decent housing like an IkeLite ( if it’s available for your camera). They’re rated to 200 feet and each is factory tested to pass that. I own a Canon A720IS, that canon does make the housing for, but it was so cheaply made that I opted for the IkeLite housing instead. That housing cost TWICE as much as the actual camera. But I know the camera is safe and that model does everything I want in a camera, both above and below.
As for amphibs ( cameras that are in their own housing such as Sea&Sea, or Bonica) I’d advise against unless you don’t mind lugging a large housing around on the surface or what your photos will actually look like. Amphibs are a compromise solution. They don’t take great above water shots and they don’t take great underwater shots. They do both only “ok” as opposed to a higher end camera that you put in a higher end housing.
When you’re looking for a camera, keep a few things in mind.
What’s it’s power consumption like? Changing batteries is impossible on a dive.
What’s it’s storage format and capacity? You can’t swap out cards on a dive.
How easy is it to point and shoot? You’re looking through a housing with a mask on your face, can you see what you’re aiming at?
You may be wearing gloves when diving. Can you manipulate those function buttons on the housing easily?
What are the options for adding things like strobes, lens or video lights later? What about the actual camera modes? You may find yourself doing macro or wide angle pics. Maybe at night? Maybe in low vis….that onboard flash can then be your worst enemy since you may not have an option to disable it and all you’ll get is backscatter.
My advice… choose ten cameras that do what it is that you intend on doing. Find out if a dedicated manufacturer of dive camera housings makes a housing for those cameras. Then choose from between the ones that do.

Yes, I would say it better to buy a single reflex camera or video camera and a waterproof case. if you are going for pro.

First, I tried a compact digital camera, with a soft housing called a “DiCaPak”. It failed on the 5th dive, and though I’m pretty sure I closed it correctly, I suppose you can never be positive. If you do go this route, if your camera is one where the lens comes out a bit when you turn it on, then turn it on before descending. Otherwise when the little bit of air that is in the bag compresses, it can cause the lens and the lens housing to get misaligned so that the lens won’t come out when you turn the camera on at depth. That happened to me for 2 dives…so in other words, bought the thing and it only actually worked twice

You could certainly go for an Ikelite housing for just about any camera. This will get you the best image quality, but too $ $ $ for me.

It is rated to 130ft/40m. I took it to 135ft in Hawaii with no problems. The image quality is pretty good, but could certainly be better (my other camera is a DSLR, so maybe I’m a bit spoiled there). I paid $ 250 for it, a year ago. They have higher-end models available, too.

In short yes, you are better buying a normal camera and case. First make sure you can actually buy an off-the-peg housing for it though as the custom mades are bloody expensive. Sea+Sea are pretty good for both prices and after sales.

I strongly recommend the Olympus. Not only is it rated to 10 meters without a housing, you can drop it on the pavement and it won’t break (I’ve tested this). If you want to go deeper with the camera you can buy a housing for it. If the housing leaks, no problem, the camera won’t get fried.

I’ve taken my Olympus on trips to Grand Cayman and Japan. It works as well underwater as it does topside.

Even if you don’t go with Olympus, definitely get some kind of camera that is water-resistant without a housing. I have seen way to many people kill a $ 300 camera in an instant because it gets bumped in the rinse bucket or the o-ring leaks.

Beware of this cam unless your have good network and webcam setup experience. The instructions are so poorly translated into English that it's laughable. The setup software will stump you quickly unless you know your way around network config, IP cams and the particulars of your existing home network. The included "Super Client" software appears to be a trial product that you must buy if you want to use it longer than one hour per day. I don't recall any mention of that in the Amazon product descriptions. At least I can't find any included reg code and every time your run the software you are prompted to download a new version...the same version you just downloaded.

The cam displays good quality video. Pan and tilt work fine. Ftp options are literally non-existent. For example, I need to ftp during daylight hours only. There is no way to schedule ftp...it's either on or off. Period.

Now that I have it configured, this product performs admirably. Had a heckuva time getting it to work with my wireless LAN - every time that the Ethernet (Cat 5) cable was pulled the connection died because the router wouldn't assign a wireless LAN IP. Turns out that the unit will not enable the assigning of a wireless IP if the router has MAC filtering enabled. Disabled MAC filtering and Voila! - the wireless IP was assigned and the camera is working perfectly locally as well as over the Internet via dyndns. Satisfied customer.

The camera I got was branded EasyN, but the box art shown on the product info page matches the box I got. Some people claim they have Foscam, Apexis, Hootoo, etc. brand, but I think it's the same camera branded in different brands to accommodate different markets. I admit, it would HELP if you are tech savvy or at least have some knowledge in network configuration to expedite the set up and get the camera running, but that's not required. This camera isn't exactly the most fool-proof camera in the market, but its feature make up for it.

The instructions are readable, albeit choppy due to the poor Chinese-to-English translation. OK here's the deal. I'm going to write a lengthy semi-review, semi-how-to for this awesome IP camera seeing the need for an instruction for Mac users. First of all, I am a Mac user running on OS X 10.7.2 Lion and I got this bad boy up and running within an hour. For all you Mac users out there, you'll need to have temporary access to a Windows machine.

If you don't have a Windows machine, see UPDATE 4 at the end of this review - then follow steps 3 and forward. I'm writing this review under the presumption that the typical user has no knowledge of MAC access control list or WiFi DHCP client table from your router to set-up the camera it via WiFi. You need it to run the application that allows you to detect and configure the camera's IP. Unfortunately, this application is written for Windows only. But that's all you need a Windows machine for. Once you configure the camera's IP address to work with your LAN, then you can use the web interface and configure a whole sleuth of other options, including the alarm feature, FTP, Mail and other. So without adieu, let's do this!

I've taken screenshots to help accommodate the mini guide below. So check out the user-submitted images for 7+ images I've added for directions on how to proceed. The instruction is for connecting the camera to a LAN - I chose this route because my WiFi network is secured over several layers of security (Sonic Wall fire wall, MAC control, etc.) and it's just easier to get the cam up and running through the LAN.

0.) Connect your IP camera to your LAN via ethernet and plug in the power supply.

1.) Get access to a Windows machine. I dual-booted to Windows Vista via Boot Camp. Make sure this Windows machine has access to your LAN.

2.) Run the application with the file name, DevFind.exe - you can find it in the directory, /EasyN F2 series IP camera installation CD/software. My included install disc was a blank CD-R disc!!! so I had to download the CD content ZIP from the manufacturer's web site: "easyntech . com / ShowDownload . asp ? id = 34" you can download the manuals in PDF format from the site too).

3.) Run the DevFind.exe to locate your camera, then modify the camera's IP address so that it matches your LAN's IP range structure, subnet mask and gateway. The default IP address assigned to the camera should be indicated in a silver sticker located underneath the camera. The same sticker can also be found on the exterior of the box. Basically, the default IP should be something along the line of 192 . 168 . 1 . 126 and access port 81 (it could be different). Since my LAN's IP range structure is 192.168.0.x, I have assigned the camera an IP address of 192 . 168 . 0 . 155. I changed out the default port of 81 to 310. Understand me so far? Once you got that down, click on the "APPLY" button to make the changes.

4.) Click on the "OTHERS" tab under the Equipment Information field. Take note of the information located in the "MAC" field, it should be a 12 letter/number string of characters.

5.) If you have access controlled enabled in your router, then follow this step. If not, you can skip. What access control means is you only allow certain network devices permission to connect to your LAN. Even if the connecting client knows your WEP/WPA/WPA2 password, they still will not be able to connect to your Wi-Fi unless their device is registered to the access control list. The unique identifier of the network device is its MAC address. If you have this enabled, then add the camera's MAC address you've just jotted down in the previous step to your router's access control list. The convention should be XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX where X is a number or a character from the alphabet. So if your camera's MAC address is 00A8F700F341, enter it as 00:A8:F7:00:F3:41 Update and restart your router after entering. If you have the means to reserve IP address designation on your router, I would do so. Since I assigned the camera an IP address of 192 . 168 . 0 . 155, I would reserve this address on the router to the camera's MAC address so that this IP doesn't get reassigned by the DHCP to another network device by accident.

I purchased this case to hold my new Z340 camera. After only using it a handful of times, one of the zippers broke off and literally fell apart. It is disappointing to see this case be constructed of such poor materials. At this point, I'm going to explore cases at a local store to see what else might fit the camera.

The one I bought is Green w370. Has one con, makes and records noise while video recording and adjusting the zoom at the same time. Other then that it takes great videos and fantastic pictures. The features are never ending, from croping pictures on the fly to making slide shows of pictures you took with music playing on the 3" screen LCD on the back of the camera on the way home in the car!! Takes great night time pictures, it was pitch black out side, I saw a group of racoons on my roof and took out the camera and took several pictures whick "all" came out crystal clear. Has a program on the cd which comes with the camera called PMB which is great, you can make movies, show and insert dates, labels, face sort, play slide shows make them and then burn to dvd, cd all sorts of things. Back to the camera, it so easy to use it has several modes, easy to advanced expert all at the turn of a dial. everything shows up on great big 3" lcd screen which is very high resolution and again crystal clear and you can change what shows up on the screen from complete set up detail to just the basics. It will show ISO battery level, picture file size 14meg to VGA which is small for emails, and many in between. also can do HD video and pictures for the hd tv, high quaility 14 meg a pic to hd video of 720HD which is like 30fps in high def. You can put in a 16gig memory card and take pictures all year long and not worry about space. With tht supplied cable you can hook it up to your regular or hd tv and play the videos you recorded right from the camera or the pictures in slide show with music or one at a time. Like I said it is robust with tfeatures too may to mention but thats a start and there many more. I paid 145.00 used like new condition and when I received it it was brand new in the box Yeepyy it was a deal of the century. I have two batteries and can pictures and videos all day and not worry and with 16gig memory thats not even a problem. I have been taking pictures since July itsOctober and its not full, there are like 1000 pics and hour of video and still no worries.
